"Popular children's author Ellen Feld has given kids another reason to turn off the TV and pick up a book. The story of Shadow is a heart-warming tale of an inquisitive foal who wanders into the woods beyond her pasture. Along the way, Shadow meets new friends, and her curiosity even gets her into a bit of trouble as she searches for a magic pond in the woods. This is a delightful book for youngsters. The story is charming from beginning to end, and the 21 colorful illustrations by Jeanne Mellin perfectly reflect the light-hearted and imaginative tone of the story. Horse-crazy kids will love having mom or dad read this story to them over and over. Bottom line: Beyond a "Shadow" of a doubt, this is a great book." - Horsemen's Yankee Pedlar

"Shadow is a delightful read-aloud or early reader book. The story is told through the eyes of Shadow, a Morgan foal, whose curiosity gets the best of him...in telling the story of Shadow, Feld includes information about basic horse behaviors and reactions. "Readers of the Morgan Horse series will remember Shadow's birth in Rusty, an ealier novel. The author has showcased Shadow in a delightful picture book. The sotry is simple and unfolds in a logical manner. The illustrations are realistic and capture the personalities of the animals. This story serves as an introduction to the world of the Morgan Horse. Young readers will appreciate the story of adventure and safe return. It may inspire them to investigate the novels and learn more about Shadow and Frosty."- Charolotte Decker, Catholic Library World

"I was as captivated by this little book as any youngster could possibly be! The story line and drawings created a smooth, gossamer, and whimsical tale that any budding animal or horse lover would appreciate and treasure. This is the type of book that builds confidence and enjoyment in a child's reading skills and creates an ideal stepping stone from 'learning to read' to 'reading to learn.' It is a magical little story worth adding to one's collection or to give as a gift to a child or grandchild (while you're at it I'd suggest acquiring copies of the other books in this series). Marguerite Henry look out...here comes Ellen F. Feld!" - RoundTable Reviews

"Feld really knows how to write for young children. And with such an appealing story, there is double pleasure in the beautiful pictures by Jeanne Mellin, an equine artist. On just about every page are not just handsome horses, but pictures of the friendly animals of the woods and, toward the end, Shadow's friend, Willow, a basset hound. Shadow is a curiously good book!" - Greenfield Recorder

"The anthropomorphic animals in the story can greatly help the child learn about security and dangers outside in the world. It is also a lesson in not trusting every story a blow-hard crows about." - Bookideas.com

"Ellen Feld has done it again. Shadow: The Curious Morgan Horse is a delightful story which follows her other successes. As loved as these previous books are, the one drawback for some was that they were geared towards an older reading audience, a pre-teen for example. These older readers are often ignored by writers so these books are treasures for mature horsey kids. My thought however, was how much these stories would also be enjoyed by a younger audience. My suggestion was for adults to actually read the stories to younger children. Now, there is an Ellen Feld horsey book written especially for these younger readers. This book is an attractive hard cover which is always a perfect choice for gift giving. Illustrations are by Jeanne Mellin and her cover artwork is charming and inviting, always important for a children's book. The picture is colourful, detailed and sweetly captures the essence of the main characters. Inside, beautiful coloured drawings appear on 22 of the 32 pages, effectively enhancing the story. This new adventure is still as interesting as the author's previous work but Shadow's story is simple enough for even very young children to follow. In this book, the main character, Shadow, is a beautiful Morgan horse foal who has feelings and traits most children can identify with, like being friendly, trusting, wilful, adventurous, carefree, afraid and thankful. Her loving mother is actually Frosty, the main character from one of Ellen's previous adventures, occupying an important but smaller role in this book. During this charming story, the curious foal experiences a big storm, listens to a big story, takes a big chance and experiences the big world. Along the way, she meets some new friends, ends up in some big trouble and learns an important lesson or two. Actually, parents could use the end of this adventure as a teachable moment to ask their children what other choices they think Shadow could have made. Horsey kids of all ages will enjoy this book but the story is bursting with details which may require fairly good reading skills. If a child can read words such as "beautiful, whinnying, daughter, and bumblebee", they will have no problem as the words are not overly difficult, just plentiful. My twelve year old daughter Kathlyn and seven year old niece, Samantha enjoyed reading this one curled up together in a big chair even more than they would have reading individually. This experience helps younger readers like Samantha develop her reading skills and encourages the love of reading in older children like Kathlyn. Most importantly, they both loved Shadow. A great choice as a Christmas gift for any horsey boy or girl." - Kelly Bowers, Editor, The Rider

"The latest installment from Ellen Feld's award-winning Morgan Horse series has arrived! Shadow introduces the newest equine addition to the already memorable characters of Gallant Morgan Farm. Lavishly illustrated with 21 full-color pictures, this hardcover edition is designed to excite and charm young horse-loving readers." - All Creature's Exchange

"This is not only a very appealing book visually, but it has a smoothly written story. Books about animals continue to be highly popular with children and books featuring horses are loved by many of the girls who are avid readers.
Shadow: The Curious Morgan Horse meets an interesting need; that of bridge books (ones that help young readers make the transition between picture books and chapter books). There is plenty of text surrounding the terrific illustrations by Jeanne Mellin (I particularly like the dazzling rooster).

When a falling tree breaks the fence around her pasture during a thunderstorm, young Shadow’s woodland adventure begins. Her imagination has been fueled by the barnyard rooster’s tale of a magical pond in the nearby forest. He tells Shadow that drinking the water will allow her to fly. In the course of her adventure, she meets deer, a skunk with bad manners and a new friend who leads her back to the safety of the pasture.

This will be a great addition to any library collection as well as a gift for young readers at birthday or Christmas time." - TCM Reviews

"Young horse lovers will enjoy reading about the adventures of Shadow, an inquisitive foal, as she investigates the exciting and strange world outside her field. Ellen F. Feld knows how to write for young riders, and her latest book, Shadow, The Curious Morgan Horse , is sure to please!" - Lesley Ward, Editor, Young Rider Magazine

"Hurrah! Another story in the Morgan Horse series is about to hit the stores just in time for holiday shopping or any great time to buy a wonderful story for a young adult. Whether you read this story to a boy or girl, or he or she reads it alone, you are guaranteed to delight in this story of a young, adventurous foal who journeys beyond the home farm and has amazing conversations with the friendly animals who know the wisdom and the fun of forest living. It captures the imagination because Shadow and the reader discover that one must seek satisfaction for one's curiosity, no matter what the cost! So see what the rooster, bumblebee, deer, skunk, and dog have to wisely say to Shadow that she will never forget!

Ellen Feld is a talented, creative, artistic writer who clearly loves her topic of horses, has clearly earned the prestige of awards given by the International Reading Association, and is eager to share her passion with eager readers who will be waiting for her next novel in this series.

Absolutely delightful, Ellen Feld!" - Crystal Reviews
